Founded in 1986 by Jerry and Janie Murrell, Five Guys started as a family-owned burger joint in Arlington, Virginia, following Jerry's mother's advice that serving a good hamburger could lead to success in America.
The Murrell family focused on hand-formed burgers and fresh-cut fries cooked in peanut oil, perfecting their simple system over the years.
With the addition of a fifth brother, the family expanded their business, opening four more restaurants with sit-down seating to accommodate their growing clientele.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Five Guys gained popularity as the go-to spot for delicious burgers with customizable toppings, served between fresh-baked buns.
Within 18 months, they sold options for over 300 units, making national headlines and attracting attention from trade publications such as Nation’s Restaurant News and Restaurant Business Magazine.
In 2003, Five Guys began offering franchise opportunities under the guidance of Jerry and Janie Murrell.
